On Sunday, February 2, we celebrated the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, on which day we remember how Joseph and Mary took the child Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to be presented to the LORD and how Mary was purified at the temple according to the Law of Moses.
On this day, we bless candles and carry them around the church in a procession commemorating Christ’s entry into the temple as “A light of revelation to the Gentiles.” This procession also symbolizes our eventual entrance into Heaven.
Many families brought candles from home and placed them on the altar steps to be blessed at the start of Mass.
